Granville T. Woods was one of the most prolific Black inventors in the 19th century. Woods' inventions revolutionized transportation, but he faced many challenges as a Black inventor. One such inventor was Granville T. Woods, the most prolific Black inventor in the late 19th century. Woods, ironically, was dubbed "Black Edison" by newspapers at the time for his contributions to science. Hate speech, whether uttered by Musk or merely endorsed by him, is amplified when the world’s richest person posts or comments on it. “It’s doubtful that Musk harbors personal animosity toward Jewish people,” wrote the Atlantic’s Yair Rosenberg earlier this year, regarding another incident in which Musk trumpeted antisemitic statements. Mezrich in recent weeks has told several interviewers about how “Elon Musk broke Twitter, and Twitter broke Elon Musk.”It’s a punchy line, and in some ways I’m sure it’s accurate. There’s plenty of evidence that Musk broke Twitter — gutted it, rebranded it, tanked its revenue, and made it unrecognizable to its most active users. But Musk was at this long before, spreading countless conspiracy theories, particularly around the Covid pandemic.

Hedge fund manager Dan Niles has revealed that he is still shorting Tesla 's stock, despite being bullish on the broader market. Niles, cofounder and portfolio manager of the Satori Fund, told CNBC's "Squawk Box" Tuesday that he sees significant headwinds for Tesla in the months ahead that could push the stock lower. TSLA YTD line Having more than doubled in value this year, Niles said the stock now faces a very different environment to earlier this year. It should be noted that Niles' Tesla short position is relatively small and accounts for about 1% of his portfolio. CNN —A novel trial that has been described as “the last roll of the dice” for a generation of HIV vaccines has entered its latter stages. Nearly 40 years since HIV was identified as the cause of AIDS, and 36 years since the first HIV vaccine trial, the medical community still does not have a working vaccine. But that is not necessarily why they were chosen to participate, said Eugene Ruzagira, PrEPVacc trial director. Evaluating the combination of a trial HIV vaccine and PrEP is a first, say organizers. “I did my very first HIV vaccine trial in 1991,” recalled Weber.

They effectively end the sale and manufacture of incandescent light bulbs. You don't have to throw away incandescent bulbs you already own, but switching could save you money. You can thank — or blame — new federal energy efficiency regulations that went into full effect Tuesday. Practical incandescent bulbs, which trace their origin to an 1880 Edison patent, can't meet those standards. How LED bulbs save energy and moneyIncandescent bulbs create illumination by running an electric current through a filament that heats it until it glows.

Had the government just banned the sale of incandescent bulbs? Much like its cousin, the gas stove, the humble light bulb has become a flashpoint in a cultural squabble between environmental regulatory efforts and the very American impulse to do whatever one wants in one’s domicile. (The Biden administration denied trying to ban gas stoves.) The response to the bulb ban was more of a whimper than a battle cry. “Thomas Edison brought the incandescent light bulb to the masses, and in 2023 Joe Biden banned it in America,” officials with the Republican Party of New Mexico wrote in a tweet.

Using this insight, the researchers are able to successfully predict an individual's long-term success with just a small amount of information about that person's initial attempts. Indeed, in another recent study, Wang himself found that an early career setback often set up scientists for later success. In all three datasets, an individual's second-to-last attempt did tend have a higher probability of success than their very first effort. Rather, there's a singular learning threshold that separates eventual successes from the rest. "Thomas Edison said, 'people give up because they don't know how close they are to success,'" Wang explains.
Marian Croak became one of the first two Black women to be inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame. Her innovations in internet technology have enabled remote work, text donations, and voting for American Idol. Last year, she was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame — among the highest honors for inventors, including Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and the Wright brothers. Croak became one of first two Black women to receive that honor, alongside the late Patricia Bath, an ophthalmologist who created a device used during surgery to easily remove cataracts. As one of the first-ever Black women to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Croak recognizes the importance of diversity in a historically homogenous industry.

John J. Boyer , raised on a Minnesota farm family with 12 children, was born blind and lost most of his hearing by the time he was 10 years old. None of that stopped him from setting up a basement science lab and aspiring to be another Thomas Edison . What did frustrate him was a lack of textbooks in braille. “When I was in high school, my physics book was older than I was and didn’t even explain what made the sun hot,” he would later tell the Wisconsin State Journal.
The answer is simple, according to more than a dozen Washington insiders, FTX employees, and crypto industry observers who spoke with Insider. I don't think anyone believed that he was going to fund candidates who were, quote unquote, committed to ending pandemics who were also hostile to the crypto industry." Alex Wong/Getty ImagesRebuffed by the SEC, Bankman-Fried turned his attention to Congress. "It's not that he was welcoming regulation," says the senior figure in the crypto industry who attended meetings with Bankman-Fried. But while Bankman-Fried was busy wooing Washington, FTX was about to become Exhibit A in the case for more effective oversight of the crypto industry.
One letter came from David Sokol, the former Berkshire Hathaway executive who stepped down amid allegations of insider trading. In his letter, Sokol says Holmes' jury may have lacked the business knowledge he believes is necessary to reach an appropriate verdict in this case. The SEC investigated but ultimately decided not to file insider trading charges against Sokol, though Berkshire said he violated the company's insider trading policy. As a knowledgeable investor, I can say with certainty that I would not have found Ms. Holmes guilty on any of the wire fraud charges." Later in his letter, Sokol even invoked Thomas Edison's name to make his case for leniency.

Elon Musk owning Twitter should give everyone pause

Elon Musk, the mercurial billionaire, had agreed to buy Twitter for $44 billion the month before only to begin raising doubts about the deal soon after. Now, Musk joins the list of rich, white men who single-handedly control social platforms that collectively reach and shape the lives of billions of people around the world. And Musk, who will reportedly have “absolute control over Twitter” according to a shareholders’ agreement, promises to be uniquely disruptive. To those in the first camp, Musk serving as the sole decider at Twitter may be cause for celebration. Elon Musk is a conglomerate, and each arm of his empire potentially gives him more leverage, real or imagined, in advocating for the others.
